PROJECT

'Notions of Beauty: NW Fashion Photography NOW'

ROLE

Curator / Cultural Producer: Christine Taylor

Challenge

Curate a multi-media survey exhibition showing work by the Northwest photographers, filmmakers, and creative directors working in the medium of fashion. This exhibit ran side-by-side with the Museum of Craft's 'Fashioning Cascadia', an exhibit of fashion design by Northwest designers.

Insights

• Conceptual creative thinking and craftsmanship of visual art in fashion is not highlighted in the Northwest.

• When we think of northwest fashion, we usually consider the fashion designer rather than the production teams that publicize their work.

•15-29 year-olds are the fastest growing fashion consumer demographic, and they're interest in engaging, experimental visual fashion projects is growing due to social media platforms where experimentation is encouraged.

• Fashion is so much more than clothing, it is an expression and a cultural statement about how to live, what we find inspirational, and what we desire.

• Photographers hold their own views on what is fashionable, views that revolve around tone, light, form and composition - in addition to fashion and trend.

The Commerce Behind the Project

We ask what is the independent creative story behind contemporary fashion photography? 'Notions of Beauty', attests to the Cascadia regions image makers dedicated to fashion - those who have developed a regular practice exploring allurement to make their own testimonies on beauty.
